In 2011, 50% of US college graduates under 25 years old had no job or only a part-time job.

One in three college graduates had a job that only required a high school diploma or less in 2012, including more than 16,000 parking lot attendants, 83,000 bartenders, and 115,000 janitors with bachelor's degrees. This shocking statistic is the reality for graduates in this time. But why? With all the services offered to them by their schools’ career services, why are so many students having trouble landing jobs in their career field of study.

According to a survey conducted by Sandler Training | Salefish, LLC, 46.38% of students who graduated within the last two years said their on-campus career center was slightly to not at all useful, while 21.74% said it was useful. Most students felt that their career center didn’t help them position themselves differently in the minds of interviewers, negotiate favored outcomes, or help them develop questioning skills.

Some might argue that students might not be taking full advantage of their on-campus career center. But when asked the questions, ‘would you take a course to better prepare you for the interviewing process and help grow your network,’ a whopping 71% of students said yes. It is clear students need and want more than what is being offered to them by their colleges. They want to learn skills and tools to help them stand out. They know what they are up against. There are hundreds of others who have worked just as hard as them. They want to stand out from the crowd so they become more than another resume in the pile.

If you would like to learn more about how you can stand out in a sea of recent graduates all going after the same jobs as you, please contact Salefish LLC to set up a meeting.
